About

Also known as: アリサ・ワイラースタイン

Alisa Weilerstein is one of those cellists who makes you rethink what the instrument is capable of. A passionate advocate for new music, she has premiered works by composers like Osvaldo Golijov, Lera Auerbach, Pascal Dusapin, and Matthias Pintscher, working closely with living composers rather than just interpreting the standard repertoire. She plays a 1730 Domenico Montagnana cello, and her recordings on Decca and PENTATONE cover everything from Dvorak and Elgar to contemporary concertos. She received a MacArthur Foundation genius grant in 2011, a serious stamp of recognition for an artist doing genuinely adventurous work. In 2023 she launched FRAGMENTS, a six chapter series of multisensory solo cello concerts that pair 27 newly commissioned pieces with Bach's solo cello suites. It is a bold concept that captures what she does best, connecting old and new in unexpected ways. Her discography keeps growing too, with a 2024 Brahms sonata record alongside pianist Inon Barnatan and a 2025 Blackford concerto release with the Czech Philharmonic.
