Few Bay Area thrash bands hit as hard out of the gate as Vio lence. Formed in 1985, they carved out a reputation on the Northern California club circuit by sharing stages with the likes of Testament, Exodus, Kreator and Voivod before most people had heard of them. Their classic lineup, featuring guitarists Phil Demmel and Robb Flynn alongside vocalist Sean Killian, recorded three albums that still define the harder, more aggressive edge of the second wave of Bay Area thrash: Eternal Nightmare from 1988, Oppressing the Masses in 1990, and Nothing to Gain in 1993. Eternal Nightmare remains the high watermark, selling over 30,000 copies and cracking the Billboard 200. After splitting in 1994 and a brief reunion in the early 2000s, the band came back properly in 2019 and proved they still had something to say. In early 2022 they released the EP Let the World Burn, their first new material in almost thirty years, a serious statement for a band that could have coasted on nostalgia alone.
