About
Vulfpeck pulled off something genuinely rare: selling out Madison Square Garden with no manager and no backing label, then releasing the whole performance as a live album. The Ann Arbor funk collective, built around bandleader Jack Stratton alongside core members Theo Katzman, Woody Goss, and Joe Dart, draws on the tight groove of classic American session bands filtered through an almost nerdy love of musical craft. Their sound sits somewhere between vintage soul funk and something looser and more modern, and it works. They first grabbed wider attention in 2014 with Sleepify, a silent album uploaded to Spotify purely to exploit a royalty loophole and fund a free admission tour. It earned them $20,000 and international headlines before Spotify pulled it. Since then they have put out a string of albums, with highlights including The Beautiful Game, which features the bass showcase Dean Town, and Mr Finish Line, which brought in legends like Bootsy Collins and James Gadson.
