About
Walter Smith III plays tenor saxophone with the kind of depth and versatility that keeps him in constant demand across jazz's most interesting circles. The Houston native is a member of the Ambrose Akinmusire Quintet and Eric Harland's Voyager, and he has recorded or performed alongside heavyweights like Roy Haynes, Terence Blanchard, Joe Lovano, and Christian McBride. With over 37 recordings to his name, he is anything but a sideman who blends into the background. As a leader, Smith built a compelling body of work on labels like Fresh Sound, Whirlwind, and now Blue Note Records. His In Common series, a run of collaborative albums with guitarist Matthew Stevens and shifting rhythm sections, showed real creative momentum over several years. His 2024 Blue Note release Three of Us Are From Houston and Reuben Is Not reunites him with Jason Moran, Eric Harland, and Reuben Rogers, a record whose title alone signals his sense of humor. He also chairs the Woodwind Department at Berklee College of Music.
