About
Also known as: Jackson, Wanda, Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Lavonne Jackson
Wanda Jackson earned her nickname, the Queen of Rockabilly, by being one of the first women to build a career in rock and roll. Her 1950s singles for Capitol Records, including "Fujiyama Mama", "Mean Mean Man" and the top 40 hit "Let's Have a Party", helped set the template. She also counts as one of country music's earliest female stars, and she toured with Elvis Presley, who nudged her toward rockabilly. Her path never stuck to one lane. She had a run of country hits in the 1960s, recorded in German for overseas audiences ("Santo Domingo" hit number one in Austria), and put gospel first for years after rediscovering her faith. A new rock career kicked off in the 1980s, and after her 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction she teamed up with Jack White for The Party Ain't Over. In 2012 she was previewing Unfinished Business with Justin Townes Earle. She retired from performing in 2019 and put out her 32nd and final studio album, Encore, in 2021.
