About
Also known as: Ernest Greene, Ernest Weatherly Greene
Pitchfork called Ernest Greene the "Godfather of Chillwave", and it's hard to argue with that. His 2009 track "Feel It All Around" is widely considered the defining moment of the entire chillwave genre, and it became familiar to millions as the opening theme for the TV series Portlandia. Greene makes music under the name Washed Out, blending dream pop and electronic textures into something hazy, warm and deeply immersive, with Sade and hip hop both cited as unlikely but real influences on his sound. Signed to Sub Pop in 2011, his debut album Within and Without cracked the Billboard 200 top 30, and he followed that with Paracosm in 2013 and Mister Mellow in 2017, the latter recorded with Stones Throw Records. His fourth album Purple Noon arrived in 2020, preceded by singles "Too Late" and "Time to Walk Away". More recently, he made headlines by filming a one take music video during the 2024 solar eclipse, and his fifth studio album Notes from a Quiet Life was announced in May 2024.
