Few artists have built a career on parody and kept it running for nearly five decades the way "Weird Al" Yankovic has. Armed with his accordion and a sharp ear for pop culture, he has recorded more than 150 parodies and original songs, sold over 12 million albums, and played more than 2,000 live shows. His style pastiches, polka medleys, and spot on send ups of acts like Michael Jackson and Chamillionaire have made him a genuine chart presence, not just a novelty act. His 2006 single "White & Nerdy" and album Straight Outta Lynwood both cracked the Billboard top ten almost 30 years into his career. His fourteenth studio album Mandatory Fun hit number one in its debut week in 2014, a first for Yankovic. Since then he has skipped the full album format in favour of well timed singles. Beyond music, he wrote and starred in the cult film UHF, hosted The Weird Al Show, and in 2022 produced Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, a satirical take on his own life. Five Grammy Awards and a stack of platinum records later, the accordion is still very much the instrument of choice.
