Will Johnson is the kind of musician who never sits still. Best known as the lead singer of Centro matic, the Denton, Texas band he started as a side project in 1995 and grew into one of indie rock's most prolific acts over 11 studio albums, he has kept himself busy across a remarkable range of projects. He collaborated with songwriter Jason Molina on their shared album in 2009, spent time drumming for the indie supergroup Monsters of Folk alongside Jim James, Conor Oberst and M. Ward, and worked with Jay Farrar and Jim James again on New Multitudes, setting previously unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics to music. His band Overseas, formed with David Bazan and the Kadane brothers, and his long running outfit South San Gabriel round out a catalog that sprawls in the best way. Since 2008 he has also been making folk art paintings focused on baseball history, and in 2021 he published a novel. Since 2023 he has been a member of Jason Isbell's backing band, the 400 Unit.
