About
Born in Botswana and raised in Perth, Xmunashe built his following the old fashioned way: by playing live, deliberately holding off on releasing recordings so he could develop his sound in front of real audiences first. He started drumming in church as a kid, picked up piano at fifteen, and by the time he moved to Sydney at eighteen he was writing his own material. On stage he performs alongside fellow multi instrumentalists Jonti and Joshuah, and the three of them build their sets in real time rather than following a fixed arrangement. They swap instruments, improvise off each other, and communicate mostly through eye contact honed by years of playing together. The sound draws comparisons to late night jazz and the quieter, more introspective side of Frank Ocean, with lyrics that stay close to personal experience rather than leaning on genre clichés.
