Yonder Mountain String Band take progressive bluegrass somewhere most acoustic acts never bother going, blending tight string arrangements with the open, exploratory feel of a jam band. Formed in Nederland, Colorado in December 1998, the four founding members built their reputation on relentless touring and a devoted fanbase that crosses bluegrass traditionalists and festival regulars. They even launched their own imprint, Frog Pad Records, to release their debut album Elevation in 1999. Over more than two decades the lineup has shifted, most notably when co founder and mandolinist Jeff Austin parted ways in 2014, but the band kept moving. Their 2022 album Get Yourself Outside earned a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album, which says a lot about where they stand in the genre. The current five piece features multi instrumentalist Nick Piccininni, who joined in 2020 after time with the madgrass group Floodwood, keeping the sound fresh and genuinely adventurous.
