The Zemlinsky Quartet ranks among the leading string quartets to come out of Czechia, and listening to them it is easy to hear why. The four musicians, violinists František Souček and Petr Střížek, violist Petr Holman, and cellist Vladimír Fortin, play with a tightness that only comes from years of working together, yet they never let that precision crowd out the breathing room a piece needs. Their programmes tend to move with a sense of dramatic arc, opening with clarity and building toward something weightier. Their repertoire reaches from the lucid textures of Germaine Tailleferre and the narrative sweep of Respighi through to the emotional depth of Schumann, including work such as the String Quartet in A minor Op. 41 No. 1. They also collaborate with vocal soloists, and their chamber work with soprano voices shows how naturally their ensemble sound folds around a singer.
