Three albums about love and the recklessness of youth set the template for Los Angeles based singer songwriter ZZZAHARA, but their fourth record, Distant Lands, marks a clear shift. Where Liminal Space, Tender, and Spiral Your Way Out traced the highs of being young and alive, Distant Lands moves into heavier territory: grief, family trauma, and addiction, with much of the material drawn from dreams about a deceased brother. It is a noticeably more personal body of work, and it shows in the writing. ZZZAHARA has always leaned into the lyrical side of indie rock, but this album pushes that instinct somewhere rawer and more searching.
