De Roode Remise is a theatre café at Haarlemmerplein 11 in Amsterdam, and it works as much as a neighbourhood meeting place as a music venue. The core of the place is a café that serves vegetarian dishes every day, made from organic products. Coffee, drinks and dinner are on offer, with lunch available on weekends, and the room can also be used for parties and special occasions. Concerts, performances and exhibitions are part of the regular programme, which gives the venue a lived in, community feel rather than that of a dedicated music hall. The music here is small scale by design. The café has put out calls for musicians to play in what it describes as an intimate and cozy setting, with a preference for small groups of one to three players. Past concert listings include Chabliz and Zalf, and Job Alone (& Friends) has also been announced, which points to a programme of singer songwriters and similarly stripped back acts. Songkick describes the programming as covering a wide range of genres, and the calendar has also included a jazz evening billed as Ola Rud, JazzDrama. The most distinctive recurring event is the Roode Remise Singing Session, held every third Tuesday of the month from 7:30 p.m. It follows the singing session tradition common in Ireland and the United States, where a group of folk singers perform songs for and with each other in a café. The core singers know each other from the Backroom Sessions at Mulligan's Irish Bar in Amsterdam. Anyone is welcome to join, experienced or not, as long as they can sing their song from memory, and listening is just as acceptable. Folk, Irish trad, pop, jazz and Americana all fit, with or without instruments, solo or in harmony. Expect moving ballads, lively pub songs and swinging Old Time numbers.
About Harrr
Harrr is a trio based in Amsterdam that plays ballads in Limburgish, the singsong dialect from the south of the Netherlands. The sound is rooted in country and blues, with a dash of Russian melancholy stirred in. It's an unusual mix, and it suits the songs well.
