Mell VF

The Wilhelminakerk is a neo Gothic church on Blekersdijk in Dordrecht, constructed between 1866 and 1869 as a Protestant place of worship. After being deconsecrated, the interior was modernized while the building retained two of its most striking original features: elaborately detailed stained glass windows and an organ façade dating from the 18th century. That combination of historic architecture and thoughtful renovation gives the space its particular character, and the acoustics that result make it well suited to choral and classical performances. Today the Wilhelminakerk functions as a concert venue with a notably broad programming range. It serves as a regular Dordrecht location for the Candlelight concert series, where string ensembles perform by candlelight to programmes covering Vivaldi, film composers such as Hans Zimmer, and popular artists from Adele to ABBA. At the same time, the church has drawn a rather different crowd through appearances by atmospheric and black metal acts, with at least two performances each in that genre and an additional show filed under avant garde black metal, giving the venue an unexpectedly eclectic track record. The upcoming 2026 bill includes the American black metal band Liturgy alongside the Dutch act Iskandr, which illustrates how the Gothic setting translates across genres far removed from classical music. The address is Blekersdijk 41, and the building is wheelchair accessible. There is no permanent resident ensemble, so the programme changes with visiting performers rather than a fixed artistic identity, which makes the architectural shell as much a draw as any single type of music presented within it.
