Theater De Vest is the municipal theater of Alkmaar, a city in the Dutch province of Noord Holland. After years of planning by the local municipality, construction began in 1977 and the building opened on 29 September 1978, designed by architect J.W. van der Scheer. A renovation followed in 2000. The theater sits on Canadaplein 2, right beside the landmark Grote of Sint Laurenskerk, and operates under the name TAQA Theater De Vest, reflecting a naming rights arrangement. Its central location makes it the main civic performance venue for the city and the broader region. The building contains two distinct performance spaces. The Grote Zaal seats 694 people and is equipped with a balcony, an orchestra pit and a proscenium arch, making it suitable for large scale productions that require traditional staging. The Kleine Zaal, with 280 seats and a flat floor, allows for more flexible configurations and tends to suit smaller or more intimate productions. Grand Café Klunder, the in house café and restaurant, serves as a gathering space for audiences before and after performances. Programming across both halls is deliberately broad, covering cabaret, musical theater, spoken theater, opera, dance, classical music and concerts of various kinds, as well as productions specifically aimed at younger audiences. The venue draws productions from both Dutch and international companies, which gives it a role beyond what a purely local program might suggest. That mix of formats and the combination of a technically equipped large hall alongside a more adaptable smaller space makes De Vest the kind of theater that can serve very different kinds of events within a single week.
