Allegaeon have carved out a distinctive corner of extreme metal by blending technical death metal ferocity with genuinely melodic sensibility and an unusual fondness for classical music influences. Their lyrics set them apart too, diving into subjects like the theory of evolution, dyson spheres, cryonics, and artificial intelligence rather than the genre's more typical fare. Based in Fort Collins, Colorado, and signed to Metal Blade Records, they've built their catalogue across seven studio albums, with 2016's Proponent for Sentience widely regarded as a high watermark, featuring guest contributions from Björn Strid of Soilwork and Benjamin Ellis of Scar Symmetry. The band has weathered plenty of lineup turbulence over the years, including two separate stints with original vocalist Ezra Haynes, who formally rejoined in 2023 after Riley McShane's departure. Their 2022 album Damnum landed on Loudwire's list of the top 50 rock and metal albums of that year, and they followed it up with their seventh record, The Ossuary Lens, in April 2025. Along the way they've also shown a playful side through covers of Rush's "Subdivisions" and "Animate," and a version of Yes's "Roundabout."
