About
Rivers of Nihil have been pushing technical death metal into increasingly ambitious territory since forming in Reading, Pennsylvania in 2009. Their 2018 album Where Owls Know My Name was a genuine breakthrough, debuting at number 61 on the Billboard 200 and earning a perfect 10 out of 10 from Metal Injection. The band builds song structures around codas and reprises, giving their music a progressive weight that sets them apart from straight death metal, and Loudwire called them one of the heaviest prog metal bands ever. After parting ways with longtime vocalist Jake Dieffenbach in 2022, the band regrouped with guitarist Andy Thomas formerly of Black Crown Initiate and bassist Biggs stepping up to handle lead vocals. Their self titled album, released in 2025 and produced at Atrium Audio with Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland, marks a new chapter for a band that has quietly put together one of the more interesting catalogues in modern extreme metal.
