Few bands blur the line between concert and ritual the way Amenra does. Formed in Kortrijk, Belgium in 1999, this post metal outfit has built a reputation for performances so intense they've been likened to funerals, with vocalist Colin H. van Eeckhout known to pierce his skin with meat hooks onstage. Their music draws from doom metal, hardcore punk and post rock, and their six album Mass series has been the backbone of their catalog, each record a deliberate act of self reflection on pain and experience. Their 2021 album De Doorn, sung entirely in Flemish Dutch, debuted at number three in Belgium and marked their move to Relapse Records. Beyond the band itself, they founded Church of Ra in 2005, a collective that grew to include Oathbreaker and the Black Heart Rebellion, cementing Amenra as a hub for Belgium's underground heavy music scene.
