Andreas Vollenweider plays a harp unlike any other, because he built it himself. The Swiss musician designed his own electroacoustic harp after finding traditional versions too limiting, and the result is something The New York Times described as "swirling atmospheric music, which evokes nature, magic and fairy tales". That sound sits somewhere between jazz, folk and new age, and it earned him a Grammy Award for Down to the Moon. His live shows became word of mouth events, partly because radio had little use for his instrumental tracks. Carly Simon became such a fan that she personally introduced him to American audiences, presenting his debut at the Beacon Theatre in New York. Over the years he has recorded and performed with Bobby McFerrin, Luciano Pavarotti and Carly Simon herself, and his catalogue stretches from purely instrumental records to symphonic works featuring guest vocalists from around the world.
