Few debut albums have had the cultural staying power of Tubular Bells, Mike Oldfield's 1973 instrumental epic that became the first release on Richard Branson's newly founded Virgin Records. Oldfield played virtually every instrument himself across its two side long pieces, weaving together rock, folk, ambient, new age and blues into something that had no real precedent. The main theme became inescapable after its use in the horror film The Exorcist, and its reach extended all the way to Dutch children's television. Over the following decades Oldfield kept reinventing his sound, adding African influences and electronic dance textures along the way. He scored the 1984 film The Killing Fields, performed at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games, and revisited Tubular Bells repeatedly, including a full re recording in 2003 to mark the original's thirtieth anniversary. His 2014 album Man on the Rocks showed he was still pushing into new territory, and a Tubular Bells 4 intro surfaced in 2023.
