Few artists have filled a city square the way Jean Michel Jarre has. The French electronic composer first broke through with Oxygène in 1976, a record he made in a makeshift home studio using early synthesizers, and it went on to sell an estimated 18 million copies. That album set the template: layered, instrumental electronic music that feels vast and cinematic, rooted in the musique concrète tradition he absorbed while working with Pierre Schaeffer at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales. Jarre has always pushed the spectacle as hard as the sound. His 1979 concert at the Place de la Concorde drew over a million people, and his 1997 Moscow show reportedly pulled in around 3.5 million, a world record for an outdoor event. He was also the first Western musician officially invited to perform in China. More recently he has been experimenting with virtual and mixed reality concerts, including a live performance staged inside Notre Dame in VR and a mixed reality show at Versailles.
