Deep Forest built their sound around something genuinely unusual: blending field recordings of indigenous and traditional music from around the world with electronic beats and lush, atmospheric production. The French duo of Michel Sanchez and Éric Mouquet coined the term 'ethnic electronica' for what they were doing, and it stuck. Their debut single 'Sweet Lullaby', drawn from a traditional Solomon Islands song, cracked the UK Top 10, and the album that followed was nominated for a Grammy in 1994. Two years later they took home that same Grammy for Boheme, which dipped into Hungarian and Romani sounds and featured a collaboration with Peter Gabriel. Sanchez departed in 2005, leaving Mouquet to carry the project forward solo. Since then, Deep Forest has gone deep into Brazilian, Indian and African music across separate album projects, and Mouquet has kept the collaborations coming, working with everyone from Josh Groban to the Ukrainian electro folk band Onuka. With 13 studio albums now in the catalog and a 2024 release called Crystal Clear out with Olivier Delevingne, the project shows no signs of slowing down.
