Enigma is the brainchild of Romanian German producer Michael Cretu, who launched the project in 1990 with a sound that deliberately broke from convention, blending Gregorian chants, world music textures, and electronic beats into something that felt genuinely new. The debut album MCMXC a.D. became a phenomenon, driven by "Sadeness (Part I)" reaching number one in 24 countries and selling 12 million copies on its own. The record hit the top 10 in ten countries and kept its place on the Billboard 200 for over 150 weeks. What followed was a string of albums that kept shifting the formula. The Cross of Changes pulled in tribal and ethnic influences and moved eight million copies worldwide, while later records like A Posteriori drew inspiration from the future collision of the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies, complete with operatic tones. Seven Lives Many Faces stretched even further, mixing ethnic chants with rap and dubstep. In total, Enigma has sold an estimated 70 million albums globally and earned more than 100 gold and platinum certifications.
