About

Also known as: Andrei Ionitza

Romanian cellist Andrei Ioniță plays on a 1671 Giovanni Battista Rogeri instrument, on loan from the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben, and the sound he draws from it has taken him to Carnegie Hall, major festivals across Europe, and stages with some of the world's top orchestras. His breakthrough came when he won first prize in the cello division of the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition, one of classical music's most prestigious contests, which opened doors to collaborations with the Münchner Philharmoniker, the Mariinsky Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic, and conductors including Valery Gergiev and Mikhail Pletnev. Before Tchaikovsky, Ioniță had already been racking up serious competition wins, including the David Popper International Cello Competition in 2009 and first prize at the Aram Khatchaturian International Competition in 2013. His recital appearances span Japan tours and landmark European summer festivals, while his orchestral diary has included debuts with The Hallé, the BBC Philharmonic, and the San Diego Symphony.
