Artful Dodger put Southampton on the map for UK garage, with producers Mark Hill and Pete Devereux building a sound they described as a natural blend of house and R&B, driven by 2 step rhythms that Hill developed out of frustration with the four to the floor structure of house music. What started as a bootleg remix operation releasing unauthorised edits under throwaway aliases grew into one of the defining acts of the late 1990s UK garage boom, racking up seven consecutive UK top 20 singles and winning the 2000 UK Producers of the Year alongside Ivor Novello recognition for their songwriting. Their most famous chapter involved an early collaboration with Craig David, whose vocal on "Re Rewind" became a landmark track for the genre. Their album It's All About the Stragglers arrived in late 2000 on FFRR Records, largely pulling together their vinyl and CD single output with a roster of largely unknown vocalists. Hill and Devereux split in 2001 over creative differences, and the rights to the Artful Dodger name were sold off, leaving the duo in the awkward position after their 2017 reunion of being unable to perform or release music under the name they created.
