Few bassists blend so many worlds into one coherent sound as Avishai Cohen. The Israeli jazz double bassist, composer, and singer draws on Middle Eastern and eastern European traditions, Sephardic Ladino folk songs, Hebrew, and African American jazz, weaving them together with a naturalness that never feels forced. His early work on Chick Corea's Origin sextet sharpened him as both performer and composer, and his first albums on Corea's Stretch Records already carried that signature mix of Mediterranean warmth and Latin groove. Over a catalogue stretching across more than two decades, Cohen has kept pushing the format. He has recorded intimate trio albums like Gently Disturbed and From Darkness, collaborated with a string quartet on Almah, and performed with over 25 orchestras for his "An Evening with Avishai Cohen" project, including the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonie de Paris. His 2012 duo record Duende with pianist Nitai Hershkovits earned him an Echo Jazz Award, and his 2021 album Two Roses brought his trio together with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
