About
Ax and the Hatchetmen turned a TikTok habit into a real career, and they even wrote a song about the grind of it all, Existential Crisis Pt. 1. The Chicago alternative and indie rock band formed in 2018 around singer and guitarist Axel Ellis, with a six piece lineup that includes trumpet and sax alongside the guitars. Most of them came up through the same jazz band, which explains the horns. Ellis writes the lyrics, then everyone reworks them and builds the music together, with fun as the guiding rule. They won the Evanston Battle of the Bands in 2019, and Peach Trees became their first breakout. Later EPs brought in some serious names: Blurry Lights features Albert Hammond of The Strokes, and 7 x 9 grew out of a Rivers Cuomo demo. Signed to Arista, they released their debut album So Much to Tell You in October 2025, with Hotel Room pulling in tens of millions of streams.
