Few bands reshaped pop music quite like the Beach Boys did. Formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961 by brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson alongside cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, they turned the surf culture of Southern California into a sound that swept the world. Their vocal harmonies and Brian Wilson's increasingly ambitious production work gave them a run of 16 consecutive U.S. top 40 singles in their early years, but it was Pet Sounds in 1966 and the single Good Vibrations that cemented their place as genuine innovators, not just hitmakers. Brian's perfectionism pushed the band into orchestral arrangements and unconventional studio techniques years before anyone else was thinking that way. The shelved Smile project became one of rock's great what ifs, while Carl Wilson stepped up as de facto leader through the 1970s on albums like Surf's Up and Holland. Over 100 million records sold worldwide, 37 U.S. top 40 hits, and a Rolling Stone ranking as the greatest American band of all time tells most of the story. The music does the rest.
