About
Benjamin Herman plays alto saxophone, and the instrument is clearly more than just his tool of choice. He founded the European Alto Festival as a personal tribute to Piet Noordijk, a Dutch saxophonist who passed away in 2011, and has kept it running through multiple editions. The festival reflects his belief in cross border exchange and his appetite for jazz in all its forms: each edition he brings together a handful of international alto players he personally admires, with the aim of introducing Dutch audiences to fresh voices from elsewhere. As artistic director he shapes the programme around guests who share his commitment to craft and expressiveness. His own love for the alto saxophone and for the broader tradition it carries runs through everything he does with the festival.
