About
Lakecia Benjamin plays saxophone like she has something to prove, blending jazz, funk, R&B and spiritual jazz into a sound that is all her own. The Washington Heights native has shared stages with Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Missy Elliott and The Roots, and she performed at Barack Obama's 2009 presidential inauguration. Her band Soul Squad exists specifically to spotlight her own compositions, and her 2023 album Phoenix pushed her into a new creative zone, leading to a live reimagining featuring John Scofield, Randy Brecker and Jeff Tain Watts. She has been mentored by Gary Bartz, who pointed her toward Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Jackie McLean early on, and those influences run deep through everything she does. Her 2026 album We Dream marks her latest chapter, and her song Noble Rise earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance. Live studio footage released in 2026 under the title Flame Keeper suggests she is very much in an active creative period.
