Billy Strings plays bluegrass like it's been plugged into something a lot heavier. Born William Lee Apostol, the Michigan guitarist built his reputation as a jaw dropping flatpicker who could hold his own at any bluegrass festival while quietly drawing from Phish, the Grateful Dead, and even Black Sabbath. His 2019 album Home, released on Rounder Records, shot to number one on the Bluegrass Albums chart and won the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album. That was no fluke either since his later releases Live Vol. 1 and Highway Prayers each took the same award in 2025 and 2026. Strings has shared stages with an almost absurd range of artists, from Del McCoury and David Grisman to Bob Weir and Tool. He has played Newport Folk, Lollapalooza, Telluride Bluegrass, and just about every major festival in between. His touring band, a tight five piece featuring banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and bass, locks into long, exploratory jams that sit somewhere between traditional bluegrass and something far harder to pin down.
