Billy Strings honors late mother on new album So Much for Goodbyes

Billy Strings has announced his fifth studio album. So Much for Goodbyes is set for release on August 28 via Reprise Records and was produced by Strings himself alongside legendary producer T Bone Burnett, with whom he is collaborating for the first time. It follows 2024's Highway Prayers, which earned Strings a Grammy and was produced at the time by Jon Brion.

The album is a deeply personal work rooted in grief. Strings dedicated it to his mother Debra Apostol, who passed away in 2025 from methamphetamine intoxication. The cover artwork was created by her. "I made this record to honor my mother," Strings said in a statement. "To notice and embrace this very significant period of grief in my life and make art from it. To turn my heartbreak into songs while using my guitar as a coping mechanism as I always have. It's always been there for me to lean on through the hard times, and I figure it always will…until it's my time to say goodbye."

As a first taste of the album, Strings has released the single "Burn the Other End," a track he co wrote with Paul Hoffman. It is a dark but gripping minor key composition that explores the connection between bluegrass and metal. The lyrics include lines like "Traded everything I love for what I have become" and "It's wasted, no wonder I'm afraid / Always struggling to justify the sacrifice I've made." The album contains sixteen tracks, including titles such as "Carry Us Home," "Mill Town Flood," "Wrestling an Angel," and the closing "Debra's Waltz," a clear tribute to his mother.

The release date coincides with the opening of Strings' own festival, the Ionia Freak Fair, on August 28 and 29 in his hometown of Ionia, Michigan. The festival is already sold out and brings together the rootsy bluegrass world of Strings with a metal stage featuring acts including hardcore band Bane and death metal outfit Cryptopsy.

Strings resumes his extensive US tour in July after breaking his leg in a skateboarding accident backstage in April. Many shows on the schedule are already sold out, including multiple nights in cities like Boston, Portland, Denver, and Baltimore. Ahead of the album's release, preorders are now available.
