Named after a Melvins song, Boris have spent over three decades defying any single label, and that restlessness is exactly what makes them fascinating. The Tokyo trio of Atsuo, Takeshi, and Wata have worked across drone, sludge metal, noise, shoegaze, ambient, and even J pop, sometimes all within the same discography. Their 2005 album Pink became a genuine breakthrough outside Japan, landing in top album lists at Pitchfork, Blender, and SPIN when Southern Lord reissued it in the US. Collaborations with Merzbow, Sunn O))), Keiji Haino, and Ian Astbury show just how wide their network runs. Jim Jarmusch, who used their music in The Limits of Control, compared their live approach to jazz musicians, the way they listen and build on each other in real time. During the COVID 19 pandemic they released two albums at once, the rock leaning NO and the ambient W, framing them together as a project called NOW. Heavy Rocks, the third volume in that ongoing series, followed in 2022 alongside the drone focused Fade.
