About
Also known as: Buzzcooks, The Buzzcocks
Few bands distilled the rush of punk into something as instantly catchy as Buzzcocks. Formed in Bolton in 1976 by Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto, they built their reputation on a run of singles that welded pop hooks to rapid fire punk energy, later gathered on the compilation Singles Going Steady, which critic Ned Raggett called a punk masterpiece. Devoto left after a year to form Magazine, but Shelley kept the band moving and pushed the songwriting toward something more personal and emotionally raw. After breaking up in 1981 following a label dispute, Buzzcocks reunited in 1989 and kept releasing records well into the following decades. Shelley's death in 2018 was a huge blow, but long time guitarist Steve Diggle stepped up to anchor the band and take on lead vocals. The current lineup, which includes Danny Farrant on drums and Chris Remington on bass, recorded the studio albums Sonics in the Soul in 2022 and Attitude Adjustment in 2026, showing the band still has plenty to say.
