Camille Thomas has a way of making the cello feel urgent and personal. The Franco Belgian cellist built her reputation through an impressive stretch of solo performances across Europe, appearing at venues like the Gaveau Hall in Paris, the Victoria Hall in Geneva, and the Konzerthaus in Berlin, working with conductors including Kent Nagano and Charles Dutoit. In 2017 she became the first female cellist to sign an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, a milestone that said something real about her standing in the classical world. Her recordings give a good sense of her range. Her debut album A Century of Russian Colours dove into 20th century Russian repertoire, while Réminiscences focused on late Romantic French and Belgian music, built around a cello transcription of the Franck violin sonata alongside pieces by Fauré and Duparc. That second record picked up a CHOC prize from Classica and an ECHO Klassik award. She plays a 1730 Stradivarius cello loaned by the Nippon Music Foundation, previously known as the De Munck Feuermann.
