Carl Carlton built his reputation on a knack for turning a good song into a great one. His cover of Robert Knight's "Everlasting Love" climbed to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974, announcing him as a serious force in American R&B and soul. But it was "She's a Bad Mama Jama (She's Built, She's Stacked)" that really cemented his legacy. The Leon Haywood penned track peaked at number 2 on the soul chart in 1981, earned Carlton a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance, and went on to become one of the most sampled grooves in rap music history. Carleton had been grinding since the mid 1960s, originally billed as "Little" Carl Carlton in a nod to the young Stevie Wonder, building a following on the UK northern soul scene before breaking through stateside. His 1981 self titled album went gold, and he kept recording into the 1990s with releases like Private Property and Main Event. Later in his career he moved toward gospel, releasing a gospel single in 2010 and earning a Detroit Music Award nomination the following year. He passed away in December 2025 at the age of 73.
