About
Also known as: Kool and the Gang, Kool, the Gang
Kool & the Gang started out as a jazz instrumental outfit called the Jazziacs and ended up with a US number one, "Celebration", a song that still turns up at every wedding going. Along the way they cycled through jazz, soul, funk, disco, rock and pop, and their first real breakthrough came with Wild and Peaceful in 1973, home to "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swinging". The second wave was bigger. Teaming up with producer Eumir Deodato and singer James "J.T." Taylor, they landed "Ladies' Night", "Get Down on It", "Joanna", "Misled" and "Cherish". Emergency from 1984 became their best seller, with two million copies in the US. The trophy shelf is long: two Grammys, seven American Music Awards, a Hollywood Walk of Fame star and, in 2024, a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Over 70 million albums sold worldwide, and the band keeps playing live.
