About
Also known as: Cassie Adenike Kinoshi
Cassie Kinoshi is a London based British composer, saxophonist and bandleader whose name is closely tied to SEED Ensemble, the group she founded in 2016 with a deliberate mission: celebrating Britain's diversity and putting a spotlight on what it means to be a young Black British person today. The ensemble blends jazz with West African and Caribbean music, and their album Driftglass earned a Mercury Prize nomination in 2019, sending sales up by 85 percent. Kinoshi's response to hearing the news was to scream and run around in circles, which feels about right. Beyond SEED Ensemble, she has been a busy presence across the London jazz scene, having played with Kokoroko and the jazz collective Nérija, while her six piece project Brown Penny took the stage at SXSW in 2022. She is also a sought after composer for theatre and orchestral settings, with credits including the National Theatre production of Top Girls and work with the London Symphony Orchestra.
