About
Catharsis bring a weight and ambition to hardcore punk that most bands in the genre don't even attempt. Formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1994, this anarchist hardcore outfit pulls from metallic hardcore, crust punk, death metal, d beat, post rock, classical, and even reggae, weaving it all into something dark, melancholic, and unpredictable. Their two studio albums, Samsara and Passion, came out through CrimethInc., the collective that released nearly everything they've put out, fitting for a band whose whole approach is rooted in DIY ethics and horizontal organization. What really sets them apart is the depth of their lyrics. Songs like "Arsonist's Prayer" run ten minutes and draw on T.S. Eliot, Octavio Paz, Greek mythology, and Nietzschean philosophy without feeling pretentious, just genuinely intense. Passion even samples Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man and includes a reggae track inspired by Peter Tosh. After going quiet for a decade, they returned in 2012 and have kept at it sporadically ever since, releasing a new full length LP titled Hope against Hope in 2025.
