About

Also known as: C. B. de Hollanda, Chico, Chico Buarque de Holanda, Chico Buarque de Hollanda, Francisco Buarque de Hollanda, Julinho da Adelaide

Few Brazilian artists have threaded political resistance and poetic craft together as tightly as Chico Buarque. Working across samba, bossa nova, and MPB, the Rio de Janeiro born singer songwriter built a catalog that doubles as a running commentary on Brazilian society, full of inventive wordplay and a quietly devastating emotional undercurrent. His 1966 breakthrough "A Banda" set the template: a deceptively cheerful melody carrying real weight beneath it. When the military dictatorship banned him outright in 1974, Buarque invented a fictional alter ego, "Julinho da Adelaide", complete with a fabricated biography and press interviews, just to keep releasing music. That kind of creative defiance runs all the way through his career. His protest song "Apesar de Você" sold over 100,000 copies before censors finally caught on and pulled it from shelves. His 2017 album Caravanas was ranked among the best Brazilian releases of that year, and he has also won the Camões Prize, the top literary honor in the Portuguese language.
