Few bands can claim to have helped shape an entire genre, but Clan of Xymox from Nijmegen genuinely can. Formed in 1983 by Ronny Moorings and Anka Wolbert, they became pioneers of dark wave, blending guitars with synthesizers and tape loops into something that sounded like nothing else around. Their first two albums came out on the legendary British indie label 4AD, and John Peel championed them early, which only added to their cult status across Europe. Their commercial peak came with Twist of Shadows in 1989, which shifted over 300,000 copies worldwide and pushed the single Imagination into the Billboard Hot 100 and onto MTV. After lineup changes and a mid 90s hiatus, Moorings revived the Clan of Xymox name in 1997 and steered the band toward a harder, more industrial sound. He has kept the project alive ever since, releasing records that range from the layered gothic atmosphere of In Love We Trust to the industrial edge of Darkest Hour and even a covers album tipping the hat to The Cure, Depeche Mode and Joy Division.
