Three albums across a decade, then silence. That is the Sisters of Mercy's recording legacy, and somehow it has only made them more magnetic. The Leeds gothic rock outfit built their reputation through a run of records stretching from First and Last and Always in 1985 to Vision Thing in 1990, driven by Andrew Eldritch's cavernous baritone and the relentless thud of a drum machine he named Doktor Avalanche. Their sound pulled from post punk and hard rock in equal measure, and tracks like Lucretia My Reflection and Temple of Love became landmarks of the genre. Their exit from recording came not from creative exhaustion but from a dispute with WEA, eventually resolved when Eldritch recorded a techno inflected album under the name SSV in 1997 that the label never released. Since then, the band has stayed active as a live act, regularly road testing new material that has never made it onto a record. Former members went on to form the Mission and Ghost Dance, but the Sisters keep rolling, still built around Eldritch and his faithful drum machine.
