Few bands carry as much gothic rock DNA as The Mission. Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams left the Sisters of Mercy in 1985 and quickly pulled together a lineup that included drummer Mick Brown from Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and guitarist Simon Hinkler, formerly of Artery and Pulp. They briefly operated under the name the Sisterhood before settling on The Mission, and the name change alone generated serious press buzz before they'd even released a proper record. Their debut, God's Own Medicine, came out in 1986 and set the template: big riffs, atmospheric production, and Hussey's melodramatic delivery front and center. Children followed in 1988, produced by Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, and hit number 2 on the UK album chart. "Tower of Strength" from that record reached number 12 on the singles chart. Over the decades they've put out ten studio albums in total, weathered lineup changes and two hiatuses, and built a fiercely loyal fanbase known as the Eskimos.
