About
Also known as: CYHSY, Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!
Few bands owe their breakthrough to the early internet quite like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The Philadelphia indie rock act pressed their self titled 2005 debut for under $5,000, hand delivered copies to record shops, and watched MP3 blogs and Pitchfork turn them into one of the defining acts of the blog rock era. David Byrne and David Bowie both came to their shows. The album eventually peaked at number 26 on the Billboard 200, entirely without a major label. Since then, frontman Alec Ounsworth has kept things interesting. The band recorded Some Loud Thunder with Dave Fridmann of Mercury Rev and Flaming Lips fame, then Hysterical with John Congleton, featuring pianist Mike Garson known for his work with David Bowie. Ounsworth also branched out with a New Orleans solo record called Mo Beauty, leaning on local legends like George Porter and Stanton Moore. Six albums in total, with the most recent being New Fragility in 2021, the project continues largely as Ounsworth's solo vehicle.
