daoud has been called the enfant terrible of French jazz, and the label fits. The Franco Moroccan trumpeter studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, then spent years moving through Europe before returning to music entirely on his own terms. His debut album GOOD BOY was followed by sold out shows across major stages, and his record ok, released on the label ACT, pushes further into territory most jazz musicians would not dare claim. On that record he weaves jazz together with hiphop, house, drum and bass, and afrobeat, playing trumpet, flugelhorn, synthesizers, and even an ondes Martenot, one of the earliest electronic instruments ever built. The tension running through his music is the point. Playfulness against seriousness, chaos against tenderness, irony against sincerity. ok reads as a personal statement shaped by collapse and repetition, and by the stubbornness it takes to start over. He has no interest in seeking approval from either curious newcomers or seasoned purists, yet somehow he tends to reach both.
