Dave Alvin built his reputation as the lead guitarist and chief songwriter for the Blasters, the roots rock band he co founded in 1979 with his brother Phil. Songs he wrote for the Blasters got picked up by artists like Dwight Yoakam and Shakin' Stevens, which says a lot about the quality of his writing. After leaving in 1986 he briefly joined X, then went solo, racking up a body of work that spans blues, Americana, country and folk. His 2000 album Public Domain earned him a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album, and Rolling Stone once called him an underrecognized guitar hero after his 2011 record Eleven Eleven. Alvin is not just a musician either. He has published two poetry collections and kept himself busy with production work for artists including Tom Russell and the Derailers. He has teamed up with his brother Phil to dig into the music of Big Bill Broonzy and Big Joe Turner, and collaborated with Jimmie Dale Gilmore on the 2018 album Downey to Lubbock. After a serious battle with cancer starting in 2020, he made his return to live performance in 2022.
