Dave Douglas has been a fixture in jazz since the 1980s, racking up hundreds of recordings and sharing the stage or studio with figures ranging from Horace Silver to Tom Waits. A pivotal stretch of his career came as part of Masada, the groundbreaking ensemble led by avant garde composer John Zorn. His quartet brings together pianist Marta Warelis, who built her reputation in Amsterdam, bassist Nick Dunston, and drummer Joey Baron. The album Four Freedoms reflects on the four freedoms Roosevelt declared in 1941, and Douglas wrote each composition with his current bandmates specifically in mind. It is a good example of how he consistently ties musical ideas to bigger themes, keeping his trumpet playing rooted in jazz tradition while pushing into more adventurous territory.
