Bill Frisell has spent decades quietly rewriting what a jazz guitarist can be. He made his name at ECM Records in the 1980s, first as a go to session player and then as a leader, and those years cemented his reputation in avant garde circles, including a fruitful partnership with John Zorn in the band Naked City and a long stint in drummer Paul Motian's trio alongside saxophonist Joe Lovano. From the early 1990s onward, Frisell pushed well beyond jazz, weaving folk, country, bluegrass, Americana and even psychedelic rock into his sound. Albums like Have a Little Faith and Nashville showed he could move from Aaron Copland to Madonna without it feeling forced. That curiosity paid off when he won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album for Unspeakable in 2005. His guitar work turns up in some unexpected places too, from the film Finding Forrester to Earth's doom metal record The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull.
