About
Dayna Kurtz blends jazz, folk, blues, and pop in a way that has left critics like the Boston Globe's James Reed baffled that she isn't a household name. The New Jersey born, New Orleans based singer and songwriter has toured as a support act for the likes of Elvis Costello, B.B. King, Mavis Staples, and Richie Havens, and earned the National Academy of Songwriters' Female Songwriter of the Year in 1997. Norah Jones and Bonnie Raitt have both sung her praises publicly, and Jones even shows up on Beautiful Yesterday, duetting on a Duke Ellington classic. Kurtz has a particular gift for rescuing forgotten material. Her two Secret Canon albums dig into obscure standards and blues and R&B gems from the 1940s through the 1960s, breathing new life into songs most people have never heard. She also recorded two live volumes called Here with guitarist Robert Maché during a 2016 Netherlands tour, and in late 2017 she launched a blues dance band called Lulu and the Broadsides, which put out its first EP in 2019.
