Death Valley Girls hit on a sound that feels like a lost transmission from some alternate universe where surf rock, 1960s girl groups, and grimy garage punk all collided at once. The Los Angeles band, fronted by Bonnie Bloomgarden, built their reputation on raw energy and a theatrical live presence that tends to stick with people long after they leave the venue. Their early record Street Venom drew attention for its rough garage rock bite, described at the time as "doom boogie, psych pop", and they kept pushing from there. Signing with Suicide Squeeze Records in 2018 gave them room to grow, and albums like Darkness Rains and Under the Spell of Joy deepened their mix of garage rock, punk, and psych without sanding off the edges. Their 2023 release Islands in the Sky leaned into catchy, upbeat psych rock affirmations, showing a band that keeps evolving. Regulars at festivals like Desert Daze and Levitation, they have earned a devoted following that lives for their unpredictable, high energy sets.
